Historical Center of Ripollhttp://www.shapedscape.com/media/reviews/photos/original/59/ad/83/803-furniture-23-1447935775.jpg
In the last years, the historical center of Ripoll has been adapted to pedestrians in different interventions, they are so different from each other and have been designed with different ideas and materials.
Comas-Pont Arquitectes proposed to extend pedestrian's zone to the most representative squares of Ripoll, Plaça Sant Eudald and Plaça Gran, we want to return its historical character to the center and to enable the commercial revitalization and the public use of spaces.
We consider to emphasize the St. Eudald square like a main village square. This zone is cleared from urban furniture to enable a versatile use and we get back the disappeared church perimeter through a pattern in the paving.
The Plaça Gran, due to its geometry, is conceived (in spite of being called a square) like an AVENUE, a commercial and stay zone. This space is organized trough a continuous element that incorporates the urban furniture, lighting and water drainage. This element reinforced the line concept. The project unifies the paving on vehicle's lane to get visual continuity and to enable to reconvert the space to a pedestrian's space in the future.
Some trees surrounded with white river stones and birches with different hights protect the stay and walk area from vehicles. The concave and convex shape of the different surrounds makes changing visual effects and let people perceive the seasons on light and vegetation.
We propose to unify the intervention through granite paving, this paving has a noble character and it is resistant enough to permit the vehicles circulation. The specific colocation of this paving, called "a la romana" (in the roman way) with three different widths, emphasize the longitudinal joints and invites the pedestrian to walk slowly on squares and faster on the streets.
On the other hand, we use steel like a second skin on specific zones (to remark the church perimeter, to develop the urban furniture, to the rest zones). We use this material because, at first, Ripoll was an important point in the metallurgic industry of Catalonia. Secondly, to join our intervention with paving of the Lira's square (planned with iron paving). Therefore corten steel was integrated as an accent on the paving, for lighting fixtures and urban furniture.
The lighting of the intervention was planned only with LEDs to minimize the energy consumption. We projected three kinds of lighting according to the space size: linear streetlamps for the avenue, sculptural lights for rest zones and hanged lamps for streets and the porch. Some fitted LEDs in the paving emphasize the St. Eudald Square lighting and lead vehicles from Plaça Gran to the road.
