Fast forward 4 short years. It is 2017 and Mission Design is presenting a new initiative, a venture whose aim is to engage international experts, policy makers and government bodies in finding solutions to emergent social and economic issues through design and architecture.
In October 2017, the World Summit and Congress of Architecture + Design + Planning, which will be held in Montréal will be the largest gathering of designers, planners, architects and related stakeholders ever assembled and is the first of its kind.
A Banner Year for Montréal and for Canada
The year 2017 has an important historical significance for Montréal. 50 years previous, Montreal welcomed the world to Expo 67; this event remains one of the most successful Universal Expositions in history and millions from around the world have fond memories of the exchanges created there. As Montréalers, it was one of our proudest moments. This event, whose built legacy still marks the Montréal skyline, defined and inspired many of the leading architects and designers of today. On Expo's 50th anniversary in 2017, Montreal, a proud UNESCO City of Design, will also be celebrating 375 years since its founding, while the whole country celebrates Canada's 150th.The World Summit and Congress of Architecture + Design + Planning, will celebrate these momentous occasions with an eye towards the future.
Converging Know-How and Creativity
This 2-week event is lead off by a cluster of international organisations representing six disciplines, whose congresses will meet, yielding an opportunity for interior designers, graphic designers, industrial designers, landscape architects, architects and planners from around the globe to gather in one hub.
Together for the first time in one place, the members of these organisations represent a wealth of knowledge and experience. In bringing these professionals together our aim is to create opportunities for trans-disciplinary pollination; sparking ideas, discoveries, projects that can be shared across disciplines.
Confirmed attending organizations:
International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA)
International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHP/ FIHUAT)
International Council of Communication Design (Icograda)
Global Design Summit
In matters of Environment and Development, the clear reference to date is the Rio Summit. Architects, designers and planners also possess unique tools for understanding and solving problems. Their expertise and skills can, and should, inform global decision-making, working to develop better, more adequate and more elegant solutions to world issues. That is why the World Design, Architecture and Planning Summit in Montréal in 2017 will be the reference point on the subject for years to come.
Gathering the knowledge brought to the table by some of the finest minds in the design/ architecture industries, a select team of business leaders, leading intellectuals, alongside representatives from UN agencies, NGOs and think tanks, governments and cities will have the unique challenge of applying these ideals to issues of the day (ie. health, globalization, climate change) to focus on shaping a program of action: a declaration or accord that will be the roadmap to implement these ideas.
2017 will be an exciting year for designers, architects and planners and for Montréal. Our city is historically a place where the world meets to look to the future together, join us again in 2017 for the World Summit and Congress, Architecture + Design + Planning.
